Aims and Scope
The COPD Foundation has a strong history supporting publications dedicated to novel COPD research, treatment and care. In addition to publishing its own original publications, the COPD Digest and the Lung Health Professional, the Foundation, from 2011 to 2013, worked closely with Informa Publishing on COPD: Journal of Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and recognized that journal as the official scientific journal of the COPD Foundation.
In 2013, the Foundation became interested in exploring new publishing formats—primarily an “open access” online-only model—and dedicating resources to establishing its own scientific journal. Dr. James Crapo joined the Foundation in this endeavor and accepted the invitation to serve as the first Editor in Chief of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation. Dr. Crapo established an editorial board of over 90 international COPD experts to help build an innovative and quality publication. In May of 2014, the first issue of the journal was launched with free access to all and the Foundation as its sole publisher.
Dr. Crapo stepped down as Editor in Chief of the journal in July of 2020 and Mark Dransfield, MD, was appointed as the new Editor in Chief. Read Dr. Dransfield’s profile here.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation is an open access, peer-reviewed medical/scientific journal dedicated to publishing original research, reviews, and communications related to COPD. Articles are published online as quickly as possible following peer review and editorial acceptance and then aggregated into quarterly issues, and made available to the COPD medical/research community at no charge.
